Title : Spin(7) compactifications and 1/4-BPS vacua in heterotic supergravity

Abstract : "In heterotic string theory the possibilities for moduli stabilization on a Calabi-Yau manifold are restricted by the absence of R-R flux. Hence in this context it is worthwhile to consider more general SU(3)-structure manifolds with intrinsic torsion. In this talk I will discuss the scenario where the compactified space is allowed to depend on two external noncompact directions. Such a construction admits a Spin(7) structure and leads to 1/4-BPS solutions that break all but one supercharge. First I will justify this scenario by demonstrating how the ten-dimensional Spin(7) ansatz can be matched to the appropriate four-dimensional 1/4-BPS flow equations, before discussing the ongoing search for explicit solutions as well as applications to cosmological inflation."
